13 Proper Reactions to Suffering *

Jesus promised us in John 16:33 that, contrary to wishful thinking that’s prevalent in the world today, we will have suffering in our lives. Now, there are different reasons that I touch on in the article 25 Reason Why Christians Suffer, but regardless of the reason, we will suffer. The thing that we can control, isn’t IF we will suffer, rather how we will respond to it. Here are 13 proper ways in which Christians can respond to their difficulties in life.

  1. Expect suffering
    • John 15:19-20
    • John 16:2, 20, 33
    • Hebrews 12:9-10
    • 2 Timothy 3:12
  2. Commit your soul to God at the very beginning of your suffering.
    • Psalms 3:5-6
    • Psalms 37:3
    • Psalms 31:5
    • Daniel 3:14-18
    • Hebrews 6:17-20
    • 1 Peter 4:19
  3. Don’t try to understand all the reasons for your suffering.
    • Romans 8:28
  4. Realize others suffer.
    • 1 Corinthians 10:13
    • 1 Peter 5:8-9
  5. Pray while in your suffering.
    • Psalms 50:15
    • Job 42:10
    • James 5:13
    • Mark 9:20-24
  6. Don’t despise your suffering.
    • Hebrews 12:5
  7. Don’t faint because you’re suffering.

  8. Patiently endure your suffering in a steadfast way.

  9. Thank God for your sufferings.
